hello world, this is me!

Another day, another blog. This one may be for keeps, though.

Allow me to introduce myself. My handle is Sam’s Better - my band name on Guitar Hero as a cheap shot to my younger brother. A recent grad/aspiring writer, my dream job is to write for the trifecta: television, theatre and film. However, my dream job at the moment is any job. The world needs writers, but apparently all positions are full. I’m still under the delusion that the right job is out there waiting for me to find it. Til then, I’m working on my tan, enjoying what’s left of summer and regaining a social life that university and a crippling five year retail job nearly killed.

Some little known Sam Facts:

Though many would refer to me as a shy, reserved person (which I often dispute), I have an entertainer’s heart, passion and upbringing. By the age of five, it was more than apparent that my parents wanted me to be Liza Minnelli. They registered me in singing, drama and lyrical jazz classes, all of which I took for at least five years. I was never the best at dance, but I had the heart for it because truth be told - I love dance. I take any opportunity to jump on the dance-floor at clubs without the need for liquid bravery. I love movies like Center Stage and Step Up, Fame, the movie and television show, and am truly obsessed with So You Think You Can Dance. I took jazz classes for five years, until I moved from Montreal to Toronto, but continue dancing on my own as a fun kind of workout for at least an hour three times a week. This explains my strong shoulders and thighs, although my feet are ruined from wearing ballet flats. I began singing upon entering the world. Similar to how I never learned how to walk but rather crawled and then ran, I didn’t talk; I began mumbling and then started belting out show tunes. This is probably the reason that my world would seize to exist without the world of musical theatre. I’ve seen Rent, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Oliver!, Wicked, Chicago and Evil Dead: The Musical (heh) live multiple times, and loved each one.

Aside from dancing and singing, my main focus for the latter half of my life was theatre. It was the class I most enjoyed as a kid and it stuck all through high school and into university. I was in every high school play, performed in skits at all assemblies, got the highest grades in drama class, so when it came time to apply for university, my first instinct was to apply for drama programs. I got an audition at the University of Toronto, Mississauga campus for their joint Sheridan College Theatre and Drama Studies program. I performed one of Beatrice’s monologues in Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, another monologue by Desdemona in Goodnight Desdemona, Good Morning Juliet, and two songs. I chose On My Own from Les Miserables and Out Here On My Own from Fame. I got in and quickly realized that my classmates all had a drive that I lacked. Though I loved theatre, I found that I preferred being the person behind the scenes: writing the scripts, directing, publicizing, etc. I switched to a Theatre major from a specialist, and took on a second major in English. I thought I would pursue more interests and took on a minor in Classical Studies, but after taking all of the classes I was interested in, it began to hinder my grade point average with classes like Latin (gun to head). Then I realized that my school had a writing program and quickly dove in and took it on as a minor. Of all the classes I took in university, the writing classes were most rewarding in many ways and made me realize what it was I wanted to do with my life which allows me to still aspire to fame without being center stage.

Quick Sam Facts:

My initials spell out S.A.M.B. Middle names are Aviva (my Jewish name meaning Life) and Michelle.

I’m a cat person.

My favourite colour is red, thus my red bedroom.

I only have one sibling, a brother a year my junior. Best of friends, worst of enemies + funniest person I know.

I have the worst CD collection on earth, I swear, and have not purchased a CD for myself in over six years.

I’m a little bit of a computer whiz. (but I’m Mac-retarded)

Certified film geek. I could never sum up a list of my favourite movies, it depends on my mood, but my favourite movie is It’s a Wonderful Life.

My favourite songs (in no particular order): Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac, Space Oddity by David Bowie, Dream On by Aerosmith, Fast Car by Tracey Chapman, The Spirit of Radio by Rush and Throb by Janet Jackson.

My favourite book is Raise High the Roofbeams, Carpenters by J.D. Salinger.

I’m addicted to celebrity blogs and feel little shame in it.

I consider myself a fourth-wave feminist.

I have the makeup skills of a drag queen.

My hair has been dyed and fried more times than I can count.

I hate most dairy products, and take calcium tablets (the size of horse pills) to ensure that my bones keep some strength as I approach old age.

I aspire to be Carrie Bradshaw. (and am probably the biggest Sex and the City fan you’ll ever meet)

I love being by myself, but love and enjoy nothing more than a great conversation with my amazing friends.

My best friend is M-Laika, and she’s the most quotable, honest, generous, thoughtful, charming and genuine person I know.

So that’s me, in a rather large nutshell. I’ll be writing here when I’m bored, when I need to vent, when I feel inspired, etc. Oh, and the tilted Chihuahua bobble-head is a creature that lives in my room. I recently dropped a purse on him and he is permanently confused now. Whoops!

Sam! I never knew you danced for 5 years! We should have a dance off. I too dance around my house and consider it a work out. I don’t need to go on and on about how we are kindred in the job situation. I think I may have to start calling you Liza with a Z from now on…and I love the phrase “liquid bravery” — welcome to today!!!!!
